Getting Comfortable with Speaking

SLS grads tell me one of the most important things they did their last year at SLS was giving their speech in the spring. After being in class with the same students for so long, they had forgotten how hard it can be to get up in front of strangers. All the practice they had in 8th Grade Language Arts gave them confidence in their new environment.
We will spend a lot of time this year getting comfortable speaking in front of a
group for a variety of reasons. Students will present classwork, recite poetry
and classic drama, and persuade and educate classmates and other students in the school. Sometimes they will have time to prepare, sometimes they will
be give impromptu speeches. Sometimes they will deliver speeches individually,
and other times as part of a group

8th Grade SpeechThe Eighth Grade Speech incorporates all of the skills you will focus on this year into three major milestones: Researching and writing your speech, preparing a visual presentation, and delivery.
You will select a topic, write a research paper using MLA standards, prepare a PowerPoint presentation of the material, and deliver the material extemporaneously to a fairly large audience. While it sounds a bit overwhelming, the project is broken down into several smaller tasks that you can easily manage. Consider it a dry run for your first year in high school, where you may have many projects like this running simultaneously! |
